Preventive Care

Preventive care is everything done to stop decay and gum disease before they start — professional cleaning, examination, and advice tailored to how your mouth actually behaves.

On the day

What to expect.

  1. Removal of plaque and tartar that brushing cannot reach.
  2. Assessment of gum health and any areas of early decay.
  3. Practical advice on brushing, flossing and diet.
  4. A plan for when you should next be seen.
Every mouth is different. This is the usual shape of the appointment — your dentist will tell you what applies to you before anything begins.

Questions

What people ask.

Why does tartar need to be scraped off?

Plaque hardens into tartar within days, and once hardened a toothbrush cannot remove it. Tartar holds bacteria against the gum line, which is what drives gum disease. Removing it mechanically is the only option.

Do I really need X-rays?

Not at every visit. X-rays show decay between teeth and problems below the gum line that are invisible to the eye. How often you need them depends on your risk of decay, and your dentist should be able to explain why they are recommending one.

My gums bleed when I brush. Is that normal?

Common, but not normal. Bleeding usually means inflammation from plaque at the gum line. It is very often reversible at the early stage, which is exactly why it is worth mentioning rather than ignoring.
