General Dentistry

General dentistry is the ongoing care that keeps teeth and gums healthy between problems — examinations, cleanings, and the everyday treatment that stops a minor issue becoming a major one.

On the day

What to expect.

  1. A conversation about anything that has been bothering you.
  2. An examination of teeth, gums, bite and soft tissues.
  3. Cleaning to remove plaque and hardened tartar.
  4. A clear explanation of what was found and what, if anything, needs doing.
Every mouth is different. This is the usual shape of the appointment — your dentist will tell you what applies to you before anything begins.

Questions

What people ask.

How often should I come in for a check-up?

Most adults are seen every six months, but the right interval depends on your gum health, how quickly you build tartar, and your medical history. Your dentist will tell you what makes sense for you rather than applying a blanket rule.

Does a cleaning hurt?

For most people a cleaning is uncomfortable at worst rather than painful. If your gums are inflamed it can be tender, and that tenderness is itself useful information — it usually means the gums need attention. Tell the hygienist if anything is sore and they will adjust.

I have not seen a dentist in years. Is it too late?

No. Practices see people in this position constantly and it is not unusual. The first visit is about finding out where things stand and agreeing a sensible order to deal with things in.
