A filling repairs a tooth damaged by decay. The decayed tissue is removed and the space restored so the tooth can function normally again.
The tooth is frozen first, so the procedure itself should not hurt. You may feel pressure and vibration. Afterwards the tooth can be sensitive to cold or pressure for a few days as it settles.
A straightforward single filling is usually well under an hour. Larger or deeper cavities take longer, and your dentist should tell you what to expect before starting.
That depends on its size, where it sits in the mouth, how heavily you grind, and your oral hygiene. Fillings are repairs rather than permanent replacements, and they are checked at each examination.
Decay does not reverse once it has broken through the enamel. Left alone it works deeper toward the nerve, and treatment then moves from a filling to a root canal or an extraction. Treating early is both cheaper and simpler.
